What do we Mean by Username?

When you first create a Page, Facebook generates a URL for it that is long and contains random numbers and characters. Not exactly easy to recite to your friends.

After your Page receives 25 Likes, you are able to claim a username, and with it a “Vanity” URL. This will be your unique Facebook URL that you can associate with your Page. Now your username can be something easier to share, like www.facebook.com/[YourPageName]

Note: Facebook generally requires 25 Likes before you can claim your username, as mentioned above, but sometimes it does let you claim it as you are creating your Page. If Facebook does not give you the option to claim your username right away, make a note to yourself to do so after the Page gets 25 Likes.

How to Claim a Username

After your Page hits 25 Likes, claim your unique username.

  1. Access your Page. In the menu on the left sidebar, click About.
  2. In the middle of the page, locate the “Username” field. Click Create Page @username.

3. In the Username field, enter the username you’d like to use for your Page. This username will generate the Vanity URL as well.

Your username should be straightforward and easy to remember. When creating a username for your Page, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Keep your username as close to your business, brand or Page name as possible.

The FPTraffic Chrome Extension allows you to grab images from Pinterest and Instagram, as well as many other websites, and schedule them to post to your Facebook Pages. It’s easy to download and use, just follow the steps below:

1. Install the extension from the Google Chrome Web Store. Of course, you must be using Google Chrome to use the extension.

2. After the extension is installed, the FPTraffic logo will appear at the top right of your browser with any other extension icons you have installed.

3. Go to Pinterest or Instagram and enter your niche’s relevant search terms.

4. When the images load, click the FPTraffic icon in the top right of your browser. The FPTraffic Extension bar will appear across the bottom of your browser and each image will contain a checkbox as you scroll through the page.

5. To select the images you would like to post to your Facebook Page, either check the individual checkboxes or click Select All on the FPTraffic Extension bar at the bottom.

6. After selecting your images, click the [x] of [y] Images Selected button, (x being the number of images you selected and y being the total found on the page).

7. A window appears in your browser with the URLs for each image you selected. Copy those URLs to your computer clipboard.

8. Access the FPTraffic URLs page (http://fptraffic.com/urls/), select the Page you would like to post the photos you selected to, and paste the URLs from your clipboard into the box.

Tip: Be sure to go to the Image URLs page and not the Link URLs page.

As always with marketing, there is a strategy to using these interest tags effectively. Before you go checking the maximum 16 interest tags that sound best to you, take into account these recommendations from Facebook:

  • Think about the types of people who are likely to engage with your content and what their interests are. Try to best define who your audience is, rather than what your keywords are.
  • Use the “5 W’s and How” tactic to target your audience. Ask the who, what, where, when, why and how of your content to determine what the specific interests are associated with it.
  • Don’t try to capture every interest under the sun. Think of your Page, brand and niche as a whole. Who will be most interested in your content beyond this one post? Target their interests specifically.
  • Think of overlapping topics and interests rather than subjects only particular to that post.

Three Features That Help Boost Engagement

Audience Optimization has three key features – Preferred Audience, Audience Restrictions and Audience Insights, all of which help you target and understand your niche audience.

The Preferred Audience feature allows you to add interest tags to target Facebook-specific data sets. This replaces the old Interest Targeting feature, which limited others outside of those interest tags from seeing your posts. Preferred Audience does not limit visibility to users outside of your interests. Instead, it prioritizes your Page posts in the News Feeds for readers based on what likely engages them.

Facebook’s algorithm takes into account how interested the user seems to be in the topic and how likely they are to engage. People categorized within those interest tags are more likely to see your posts. Rather than limiting your reach, this feature helps improve visibility to the right audience for your Page.

You still have the ability to limit visibility by using the Audience Restrictions feature. If you choose to use this part of the tool, only people in the audiences you choose will see the post anywhere on Facebook.

Be careful! If you restrict audiences of certain locations, that can cause issues with tools you use to manage your Facebook Page, like FPTraffic.

Using interest tags in the Preferred Audience feature allows you to see how your audience is responding. The Audience Insights feature will show you how each interest tag you set contributes to a post’s reach by showing how many clicks, shares and likes came from each category you chose. You can watch how particular tags perform over time and better customize your content for your audience.

How to Set Up Audience Optimization on Your Facebook Page

If your Facebook Page has over 5,000 Likes, the Audience Optimization feature turns on automatically. Otherwise, you need to turn the feature on in your Page Settings. Also, know that currently, Audience Optimization is only available for English language Pages.

To turn on the Audience Optimization tool, complete the following steps:

  1. In the top right corner of your Facebook Page, click Settings.
  2. In the left tab column, click General.
  3. In the middle of the page, locate the row labeled “Audience Optimization for Posts.” Click Edit.
  4. Check the box allowing you to enable the feature. Click Save Changes.

Now when you make a post update on your Page, you’ll see an icon at the bottom for the Audience Optimization tool. Click the icon, and you’ll see the two tabs for Preferred Audience and Audience Restrictions. You can then set your interest tags and choose whether to use the Audience Restrictions feature. Currently, you can only set your interest tags using a desktop browser.

After you’ve published your post, you’ll see a settings wheel icon next to the time of publication, where you’d normally see the globe icon. Hover over the wheel icon to see the Audience Optimization settings you configured.

Now it’s time to see which interest tags are working for you.

How to Use the Audience Insights Feature

You can then use the Audience Insights feature to see which subsets are most engaged in your content. From your top menu, click Insights. Your post will have a special icon under the Target column, indicating that you selected a Preferred Audience for that post.

Click the post, and you will see a tab for Preferred Audience.

Note: You won’t be able to see your stats until your post has reached 100 people. When you do reach 100 users, your stats will appear for each interest tag you selected. You won’t be able to see stats for shares and likes until you reach 100 of those as well. After you hit those milestones, you can gain insights into your most engaged audience.

Create Your Post Schedule

The first step to posting to your Facebook Page consistently is setting a schedule. We have found that posting consistently, at least once a day, is vital in growing your social media reach. You must keep your audience engaged with your content or they will stop seeing it.

With FPTraffic, posting consistently every single day is easy and literally takes a few minutes to setup. You create your Page post schedule, find some content, and then FPTraffic does the rest for you. Let’s take a look at how to create your Page schedule.

The Schedules page can be found under the Pages menu in the FPTraffic navigation. Click on Schedules and then select the Facebook Page you would like to set your schedule for.

FPTraffic will post to your Page at most once an hour every hour of the day. We recommend posting 2-5 times a day, but you should test posting as many different times a day as you’d like. For example, to start you may want to post once in the morning, once at around noon, and then once later at night. After a few days of posting, you will be able to see what times people engagement with your content most.

Scheduled Times

If you are already getting engagement on your Facebook Page and it’s not a brand new Page, you can use your Page Insights to see what times your fans are online most.

Your Facebook Page Insights has a lot of really cool data you should be checking often, but one in particular that you can use to help you decide what times to choose when creating your posting schedule is When Your Fans Are Online.

You can find this section of your Page Insights by going to your Facebook Page, Insights (shown in the top menu), and then select Posts from the left menu. At the very top you’ll see the graph shown in the screenshot above. Yours will probably look different, but this will show you the times your fans are on Facebook the most throughout the week.

If you hover of the Times graph (like I did shown above), you will see each particular hour. The times of day are shown in your timezone, so make sure you factor in the difference when updating your Page Schedule on FPTraffic. For example, the FPTraffic timezone is Central and I’m Eastern, so I would set my schedule to include 5:00pm (6:00pm is the best time according to the graph above).

One thing to keep in mind as you watch your Pages for the posts being published by FPTraffic is that not all posts go out at the top of each hour. If you add 5:00pm to your schedule, FPTraffic will post to your Page between 5:00-5:59pm. We post throughout the hour to help make posts seem as organic as possible. This will help your reach.

Test new times

Once you’ve had your schedule setup for awhile and your Page is getting engagement, don’t forget to test new times. You can change up the hours you are posting or add new ones. You should also check your Page Insights often for changes to when your fans are online most often.
